I like the idea that the user can arrange the magnets how ever they like to. They go from A-Z but they also have meanings that can be put into categories or grouped together. And of course, not only do they look good but they can be used to hold things on the fridge

B- Better Education; children need their education and health more than anything.

C- Constitutional Change; many peices of legislation still in place that kevin rudd has not changed or removed meaning sorry day has not had that much of an effect as people might think.

D- Donate; ANTaR is based off donations made by members

At first i thought about designing a poster for ANTaR that could appear in an office. The thing about posters is that i think they become of less importance as time passes. They get shabby and loose colour and eventually become dust catchers on the wall.

I have always liked magnets. They have an interactive element and are useful and can add colour to a boring fridge, filing cabinet etc.

I decided to design 26 magnets that went from A-Z about facts and goals of ANTaR.

The final magnets came out to be 50mm x 45mm and are bright colourful and informative.

Her usual day consists of going for a run with her dog, working a 9-5 day at her office on the university of NSW campus, and returning home to her apartment in Darlinghurst where her boyfriend and her currently live. She often gets involved in public rallies and protests but if she does not have time to attend the event she makes sure she signs the petition.  Clarissa strongly believes in the power of the individuals voice.

Clarissa is an independent women who fills her spare time with reading and weekend getaways. She has been an animal rescue volunteer since she was 16 years old and still likes to get involved in her spare time.
She likes the people she works and is very grateful to be surrounded by such enthusiastic, dedicated individuals.

She enjoys watching her odd movies and television programs but loves to hold dinner parties for friends and organise events. Clarissa strongly believes in the quote, “be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for human rights.” She would also like to be a mum one day.

What is the main goal of ANTaR? i would have to say that the main goal of ANTAR would be to close the gap between indigenous and non indigenous Australians in an effective and peaceful way. It is so important to work with them and not for them. Because ANTaR works so closely with people they understand that ANTaR is trying to help in a positive way and help with the most important issues that need to be addressed.

How does ANTaR contact and provide information to the general public?  Well being the online campaigns coordinator i would have to say that majority of contact with the public is web based. ANTaR’s sea of hands is a physical form of contact but it is an event rather than an everyday form of communication. Bullitins, newsletters and emails are the main form of information and contact.

Do you think that people would be more likely to recognise the sea of hands than ANTaR itself?  Yes i would say so. The sea of hands is what you see on the surface and ANTaR is behind it all if you dig deeper, it just depends on the individual and if they dig deeper or not. But sea of hands had been so successful it is hard for it to not be highly recognised.

Do you find that this sort of public event is more effective than street marches/protests?  marches and protests are about fighting for something, we are just increasing awareness and recognition of ANTaR and what we try to do.  So yes i would say that it would be more effective. From a personal view i think that people are more likely to get involved with something friendly than something that is considered violent and possibly illegal.

Are you the sort of person who enjoys attending protests and public awareness marches? yes i was, when i was younger i loved it. It feels so hands on and demanding. I dont as much anymore as id like to because i’m very busy but i still get out there when i can. I think my line of work is a contribution in itself.

The Sea of Hands was created in 1997 as a powerful, physical representation of the Citizen’s Statement on Native Title.

The Citizen’s Statement was a petition circulated by ANTaR to mobilise non-Indigenous support for native title and reconciliation, at a time when native title rights were under serious threat from the Howard Government’s proposed changes to the Native Title Act 1993 (see Background on Native Title).

Plastic hands in the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, each one carrying one signature from the Citizen’s Statement, were installed in front of Parliament House in Canberra in October 1997, in what was then the largest public art installation in Australia.

The Sea of Hands has become a symbol of the People’s Movement for reconciliation – and a tangible recognition of the failure of the Howard Government to lead Australia in the reconciliation process.

Wherever possible, the Sea of Hands reproduces designs by a local Indigenous artists.
